Japanese Destroyers

Description

Three different destroyers of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in Yokosuka, Japan. DDG 174 looks very much like a US Arleigh Burke class destroyer, and uses much of the same technology and weapons systems. DD 111 is the oldest ship here, and her primary mission is anti-submarine warfare. DDH 181 is Japan's newest "destroyer." It looks very much like a modern LHD of the US Navy, however, it does not have a floodable well-deck and does not cary landing craft that can hit the beach. The Japanese Navy is defensive in nature - amphibious warships that carry Marines are definitely offensive tools of maritime warfare. DDH 181 carries many helicopters and has hanger bays to hold aircraft within the ship.

the kongo class ddg is basically the arleigh burke ddg, with the aegis radar and some changes to suit a defensive role.
